Great Article Mike....great information that should be introduced / discussed to ALL students who are required to do any type of research project at home or at school. Yes, I agree....critical thinking is the key.

With Safeshare you have to go to another page, but on YouTube there is an option to disable related videos with the embed code.

Hey Mike! This is a great resource! Being that a maxi pad commercial showed up during my math class a week ago, I am very interested in using this! I haven't had a chance to look around the site, but was wondering if there is a way to embed a safeshare version of a youtube video or do you always have to go to an external page?

I love this quote! We've taught our middle schoolers to look at author, publisher and bias to determine if a site is credible. If you can't figure out who the author is and who is responsible for hosting the information, then why should you trust it?

Couldn't agree more about students choosing not to visit the more onerous content they see on the Web. Actual filters are not 100% garbage-proof, which is why instilling "internal filters" is so important. I think this means fostering habits of mind in our students that become second nature and demonstrate critical thinking, like questioning anything that appears to take an extreme position or is an oversimplification of an issue (something our politicians love to do).

I take issue with Dr. Meyer's assertions about how complex a task such as texting is and just how much attention the youth need to attend to it. Also, it is still unknown if developing these multitasking abilities will lead to long term positives. These youths may grow their ability to perform mentally complex tasks simultaneously. Again, the main target that educators, parents, and the students need to focus on is prioritizing.

I wholeheartedly agree.... critical thinking in a digital age needs to be addressed in every classroom in every discipline.... a one shot lesson on "cyber safety" is a start but not the solution...just like eradicating unkind behaviors has to live across the school community, teaching students to critically analyze information has to be the responsibility of all.

Critical thinking about the web is certainly important. Yet it seems that what this is getting at is some for of self-regulation. The students, as well as you and I, need to be able to evaluate what we are seeing on the web and how often it is accessed. In other words, a student may identify web content as hateful but they also need to make the choice not to visit it. I don't think those two skills are the same thing. the filters are important but in many ways at least some raw information will work its way through.
