Bill Brown tells the students about Eli Whitney using our students in a time line.

Claire and Bridget hard at work.
We had a wonderful field trip to the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden on January 23rd. The children were treated to a delightful talk by Bill Brown. They learned about the inventiveness of Eli Whitney. He then proceeded to tell the children about the Farmington Canal and its importance to Connecticut by using the story/song of the Erie Canal. The children really enjoyed building their own canal boats. They also had the opportunity to see how a canal lock works. We have some great pictures from our trip.

Due to our wonderful Library/Media Specialist, Mrs. Bizier, we were able to view the inauguration of President Barack Obama as a school community this afternoon. The children’s homework tonight is to read about our new President in their Scholastic News. Please ask your child what they know about this momentous occasion.

Here it is! The project all third graders enjoy completing…Make Your Own Map. It is important that the children get to work planning their map. They brought home directions and a scoring rubric. They also got a chance to see some completed projects from Mrs. Horn’s class. The children seem excited to get started on this project. Several of them were already in the planning stage during indoor recess. The children should complete this project on poster board and give it a lot of effort. The map project is due on January 29th. Each student will present their project in front of the class and we will display them in the hall. This is a great time for them to use their imagination and creativity!

We are learning about maps in Social Studies. The children have learned that there are 5 parts to a map. Title and Author, Graphic Image, Scale of Miles, Compass Rose, and Legend or Key. For homework tonight they are to create a town on the 24×24 inch grid they brought home. They must include the items written on their assignment sheet but may add some of their own. On this map they do not have to include the 5 map parts. We hope to recreate the town in the computer lab tomorrow with the program – Neighborhood Map Machine.
