We Are Well Under Way

Mrs. Nutley talks to our class about respecting one another.
As we enter our fourth week of the new school year, the children have done a marvelous job getting used to third grade routines and back into the swing of school. They all seem to be happy and eager to learn. We have begun fall assessments in both reading and math which will continue for the next several weeks.
Thank you for a great response to our first book order. It went out yesterday and we should be receiving our books in about 10 days. It allowed me to order 10 new books for our class library.
We had two guest readers visit us this week. Mrs. Nutley came in to read “Mean Jean the Recess Queen” by Alexis O’Neill. Afterward the children discussed how Jean changed from mean to nice after a new child included her at recess time. Look for this book to come home in the near future to read and enjoy with your child. Each trimester Mrs. Nutley will choose a new book to share for each grade level. The book will be sent home for an evening with each student at that grade level. It is part of an anti-bullying program that Mrs. Nutley and Dr. Wrang are jointly conducting this year.
Dr. Wrang also came in to read “Nobody Knew What to Do”by Becky Ray McCain. Dr. Wrang led a discussion of what it feels like to be bullied and some strategies for handling it. One strategy that should not be used, which was often suggested, is to “just ignore it”. Keeping it a secret is not good for the victim nor the bully.
I look forward to seeing you at Open House this Tuesday, September 22, at 7:30 in our classroom, room 16.

Dr. Wrang reads to our class as part of Island's anti-bullying program.
