On St. Patrick’s Day, students and staff at Ryerson School were treated to some traditional Irish Step Dancing, performed by current and former students.

Fourth-grader Meghan Lewis and third-grader Abigail Murphy were among the performers! Student learned about the traditions of Step Dancing and even had the chance to learn a few steps from these talented girls!
Many thanks to our very own Irish steppers for sharing this exciting cultural event with us!

Congratulations to fourth-graders at Island Avenue School who presented their ExploraVision projects to fellow classmates and special guests (family and friends) at school today.
Four groups of students developed entries on the following topics:
- “Plumpy Plant” to solve world hunger
- “Team MSSC Breast Cancer Vaccine” to prevent breast cancer through a vaccine
- “Fission/Fusion Cycle” to rid the world of nuclear waste and to create unlimited energy
- “Transgenic Baseball Bat” to develop a superior wood for baseball bats that won’t fracture
Mr. Ginsburg and I are SO proud of our students, who worked afterschool developing their projects. All students received award certificates from ExploraVision and the “Transgenic Baseball Bat” won an honorable mention for their project. CONGRATULATIONS!
ExploraVision, sponsored by Toshiba and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. All inventions and innovations result from creative thinking and problem solving.
We are so proud of our students’ accomplishments! We’d also like to thank an incredible DHHS junior, Zach Glassman, who joined us after school to help mentor and coach our students through their projects.

We’re looking forward to welcoming our students back today after the February break. Hope you had an exciting–or relaxing–week with your families and friends. Can’t wait to hear the stories of adventures from our students!
Teachers were in school on Monday, February 23, involved in a variety of Professional Development Activities. Fellow Math Specialist, Stacey Daly, and I had the pleasure of presenting the third in a series of “First Steps in Mathematics” Workshops for our K-2 teachers. We concentrated on helping our students develop problem-solving strategies and repertoires for operations and calculations, in a developmentally-appropriate fashion.
We have such a dedicated group of professional teachers, who all have the same goal in mind—improving students learning. Happy first day back with students!

Students recently honed a wide variety of Math skills using Valentine hearts as manipulatives. They explored and further developed concepts in estimation, graphing, perimeter, measurement, operations, and calculations. They also had fun in the process!

Friday was “Sports Spirit Day” at Island Avenue School. Students and teachers had fun “sporting” their favorite sports jerseys. I asked a group of students to use some “mental Math” as a quick warm-up to find the sum of all the numbers they saw on each other’s clothes in the classroom and they soon came up with totals in four digits!

I had fun wearing one of my son’s football jerseys. Some of my students were quite excited to see that his team had a 10-0 season. Here’s a riddle to find the number of my jersey:
It’s an even, two-digit number, between 30 and 60. The sum of the digits is 13. Any guesses?
Can you make up a Math Riddle for a number of your choice? If so, post it here!
Whatever football team you may be rooting for this weekend in the Superbowl, have fun!

In a very moving, solemn, assembly, eight fourth-graders were recently sworn in as new Student Council members at Island Avenue School. Principal Kathy Nutley introduced the students, who then gave brief speeches about themselves and pledged to serve their school. Students from all grade levels attended this assembly, as well as parents, grandparents, and other family members.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW STUDENT COUNCIL!!!
