I really liked this book. Charlie Anne’s mother died, and her father needs to go up north and build roads to earn oney for the family. This leaves Charlie Anne, her siblings, and her new mother, Mirabel, all alone at the house. Charlie Anne is excited when she hears that one of her neibors, Old Mr. Jolly, will be coming home ,soon, with a new wife! When they get back, Charlie Anne notices someone else in the car. It wasa girl ,about her age, named Pheobe. Charlie Anne would like to friends with her, but Mirabel is not happy with this because Pheobe is colored. When an accident happens to Pheobe, Mirabel realizes that pheobe is no different from anyone else.
